"Shining Reference" Love, Angel Music, Baby by Gwen Stefani

In the vast, empty space of the Colorado Lounge where Jack an aspiring, but frustrated novelist has set up his typewriter, a blank white page sits waiting for him, he appears to lack creativity, entirely entropic - bankrupt of ideas, mind, and spirit. Outside, Wendy teasingly chases her son into the Overlook Maze built of hedges on the grounds. They explore the convoluted passageways of the maze - and struggle to find their way around. While wandering through the lobby of the hotel at the same time, Jack ambles over to a table-top scale model of the Maze outside. As he leans over and peers downward on the miniature replica with a domineering gaze, an overhead God's eye-view of the Maze appears. An indication of his impending madness, or evidence that his spirit is in league with the Overlook, he seems to see his wife and son strolling in the hedges of the Maze. The camera tracks slowly into the mirror-image of the outdoor Maze, picking up two small figures and faint voices moving in the Maze - it is his wife and son in the very center of the maze. The next camera shot is a normal, eye level view of the two walking in the Maze. A reference found to these scenes is the music video of the song "Waht You Waiting For?" from Gwen Stefanie's album "Love, Angel, Music, Baby"; 2004. The video starts with a story of the songwriter who suffers from a serious writers block. Scenes with empty pages lying on the piano with sudden appearing texts are apparantly a part of this music clip. Another reference to "Shining" is obviously the end of the clip, where girls dressed in crazy bunny dresses are running through a hegde maze, as the last hunting scene in "Shining" where Jack hunts his son through the maze and finally freezes to death within the maze.

Finally arrived. The view out of the window looking at the ghost of Fujiama. Changing site; The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick, 1980. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) gets a job as the custodian of the Overlook Hotel, in the mountains of Colorado. The place is closed down during winter, and Torrance and his family will be the only occupants of the hotel for a long while. When the snow storms block the Torrance family in the hotel, Jack's son Danny - who has some clairvoyance and telepathy powers - discovers that the hotel is haunted and that the spirits are slowly driving Jack crazy. When Jack meets the ghost of Mr. Grady, the former custodian of the hotel who murdered his wife and his two daughters. During their stay, strange things occur when Jack's son Danny sees gruesome images powered by a force called 'the shining' and Jack is heavily affected by this. Along with writer's block and the demons of the hotel haunting him, Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse. An interesting thing about this film is that the exteriors of the Overlook Hotel in the movie were filmed at Timberline Lodge. This lodge is on the slope of Mt. Hood in Portland, Oregon. The actual Timberline lodge does not have the elaborate hedge maze outside the hotel, which figures prominently in the movie's climax. Built in 1937 at the 6,000 ft. level, Timberline Lodge was officially opened on September 28, 1937, by the President, Franklin Roosevelt. The WPA (Works Progress Administration) built Timberline Lodge and interior furnishings were crafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Mt. Hood, the fourth highest mountain in the Western United States, was named for the famed British Naval Officer, Admiral Arthur Hood. Sailing up the Columbia for King George III, British Navy Lt. William E. Broughton and his crew first saw the mountain on October 29, 1792, when they got to the Willamette River at the present-day site of Portland. They bestowed the name of their superior upon the mountain. Mt. Hood is the second most climbed mountain in the world, second only to Japan's Mt. Fujiama.
