Still early in the morning - working and listening to "Zoot Woman" - very loud. Later: in need of another hour sleep before a new long day of work will start. By the way, "Zoot Woman" is a British pop band which plays electronic rock music. Formed by Adam Blake and Stuart Price as an instrumental project, the band enlisted Jonny Blake in 1999. The line-up now includes Bee Hatherley (bass, synthesizers) who joined the band in 2004. Image courtesy of Rankin, 2003.

"T Boy" by Shin Tanaka

T Boy by Shin Tanaka
Originally uploaded by F. Sigorski.

Shin Tanaka is a paper toy creator. When he started creating paper models and templates for all his favorite sneakers he couldn’t afford when he was a student - people were simply stunned about his detailed life-size objects. Shin’s sneakers were then displayed in a showcase of the Nike design library and by now he has collaborated with over 80 brands (Adidas, Ark United, etc.) and many different artists. But not only Shin’s sneakers became big - he got most popular with the T-Boy, one of his various paper toy models, which he developed on his research for a new surface for his graffiti pieces. His detailed toy - templates are available for download on his website so that everyone can customize, build up and display an own individual character with a different face. Shin Tanaka's Homepage. This entry is related to some smaller work and ideas. Somehow playing and experimenting around with the idea to make work that is as hypertext or blogging interconnected - to work form other people, as an extension, as an own remark. Writing for Wikipedia or as per example the placement of papermodels in Google Earth environment, an own version or extension of Shin Tinakas papertoys and other thoughts came up. Re-appropriate design or art or something in this line of thought. Or work based on Daft Punk's "Technological" lyrics.

A January update. From a movie watching & scanning session. (Hunting for images and references for work.) Filmscreen out of "The Fog". "The Fog" is a 1980 horror movie directed by John Carpenter, who also wrote the screenplay and composed the music of the film. It stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins and Janet Leigh. It was released by Avco Embassy and distributed by AVCO Embassy Pictures. The movie is a classic ghost story that takes place in a Northern California fishing town called Antonio Bay (real location Inverness, California and Pt. Reyes lighthouse). The town is about to celebrate its centennial when mysterious events, including the gruesome murders of three fishermen, accompany a strange, glowing fog that spreads over land and sea. The local minister, Father Malone, discovers the diary of his grandfather (who was also the town's minister), which contains a dark secret unknown to the town's current inhabitants.

The diary reveals that, in 1880, six of the founders of Antonio Bay (including Malone's grandfather) deliberately sunk and plundered the Elizabeth Dane, a clipper ship owned by Blake, a wealthy man with leprosy who wanted to establish a colony near Antonio Bay. The six conspirators lit a fire on the beach near treacherous rocks, and the crew of the clipper, deceived by the false beacon, crashed into the rocks. Everyone aboard the ship perished. The six conspirators were motivated both by greed and by disgust at the notion of having a leper colony nearby. Antonio Bay and its church were then founded with the gold plundered from the ship. The mysterious fog contains the vengeful ghosts of Blake and the clipper's crew, who have come back on the hundredth anniversary of the shipwreck and the founding of the town to take the lives of six people (symbolic substitutes for the six conspirators). Hanzo Hattori Sword

Hanzo Sword
Originally uploaded by F. Sigorski.

Japan’s legendary ninja Hanzo Hattori appears in countless ninja movies and novels dressed in black, flying through the sky, swimming underwater, tunneling beneath the ground, and vanishing into the darkness. Ironically, the name of this real-life ninja is rarely found in historical encyclopedias. His life story is fuzzy, which is to be expected, since he was a ninja, a master of the art of invisibility. Hanzo was a member of the Hattori family, the leaders of the ninja community of Iga Province in feudal Japan. It is thought that there may have been as many as four ninja who took the name Hanzo Hattori. The ninja who made famous the identity of Hanzo Hattori was named Masanari. He was said to have begun training on Mt. Kurama north of Kyoto at the age of eight, and became a full-fledged ninja at age twelve, and was known as a master ninja at age eighteen. His father Yasunaga served Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, the lord of Mikawa and the grandfather of future shogun leyasu Tokugawa. Though Hanzo was born and raised in Mikawa, he often returned to Iga, home of the Hattori ninja family. The Iga and Koga regions were the birthplace of ninjutsu, and there were over 70 clandestine organizations carrying out the art. In the surrounding mountains there were large institutes for training in military tactics. Onmyodo, a Chinese system of divination propagated in Kyoto by Abe Seimei, had been brought from the capital. The village of Yagyu, along the Kyoto-Nara border, was home to a venerable school of sword technique. And the Hozo-in temple in Nara supported of a unique school of spear fighting. All the arts necessary for ninjutsu could be acquired within a radius of 45 miles from Iga.

Warriors specializing in demolition, political warfare, and gathering intelligence were based in the region. Tanba Momochi and Nagato Fujibayashi, both of Iga, established rival ninjutsu organizations based on conventional techniques of warfare, and were especially proficient in areas of unconventional warfare. Their schools improved upon techniques of the time and developed new ones by incorporating the teachings of the various martial schools in the vicinity. In legend, Hanzo Hattori is known as a superhuman ninja warrior. It was said that he could sit behind a hand-held fan, bow, and then suddenly disappear, only to reappear in the next room. He was also master of the art of using a rope to capture an enemy who sneaked up behind him as he sat in seiza posture. He was renowned as an "other-worldly" warrior, capable of psychokinesis and psychomancy. He could discern clairvoyantly the plans and strength of an enemy army.

Hanzo’s remains now rest in the Sainen-ji temple cemetery in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The temple also holds his favorite spears. Hanzo’s Gate is now one of the entrances to the Imperial Palace, and a Hanzo-mon subway line, named for the gate, runs between central Tokyo and the southwestern suburbs.
