This exhibition and book project deals with the contemporary changes in labor
practices re-sulting in drastic life changes which emerged in the course of
forced capitalism in the early 90's. No matter what we do, it is determined
by utilization and exploitation. Though once relegated strictly to the economic
sector, the market logic nowadays seizes a steadily in-creasing number of
fields. As this phenomenon pertains to art as well, it is no wonder that a
fledgling critical art practice has likewise grown in recent years. Considering
this, the cultural producer – an embodiment of the labor-leisure balance
– emerges as the celebrated role model for the economic future. Does the
practice of cultural work offer new ideas for resis-tance? Or has this practice already
served as a model for the exploitation of immaterial labor? Parallel to the changes
of labor forced by technology, the flexible, highly mobile, self-organized, highly
motivated entrepreneur is seen as the epitome of this economic turn. As large
groups of people are being expelled from society, the life of others is becoming
an in-creasingly self-determined action in the course of central demand for
self-defined visionary work. It is our aim to explore emotionalized actions,
the increased demand for flexibility, and the attitude towards one's own actions
in the form of an exhibition and a book project. Claudia Hardi's book contribution
is a rather ironic remark on our new economic lifestyle. Her book insert has the
appearance of a newspaper, with diverse text genres collected and quoted from
various media sources. This re-writing is a statement on the state of affairs
of the current labor market and economy. Contribution to the Publication "Tätig|Sein" Exhibition:
